rhia reviews #34 | The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

My Goodreads rating: ★★★★★

This book is fantastic. I have no doubt that it will be one of the top books of 2017.

I, like many others, have been shocked and disgusted over and over again by the many incidents of police V. black people that have been in the news recently, and this novel really brings home how those incidents affect those involved.

This is such an important novel that everyone should read. The narrative in THE HATE U GIVE reflects so much of real life at the moment and also raises a lot of questions in your mind about racism – it reminds you that what might be a joke to you is not a joke to somebody else.

I’ll be recommending this book all over the place this summer.
