There are some books I could reread constantly, and there are some I’ve been dying to reread this year either because I love them so much or to revisit them before their TV or film adaptation arrives. Here are my top five!
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
After the Baudelaire children’s parents are killed in a terrible fire, they are sent to live with their uncle, Count Olaf, and thereafter a long list of other relatives or adoptive schemes, a phrase which here means ‘adults who have no concept of how to correctly care for three orphaned children’.
Netflix premieres this series next January, and I am desperate to reread the books before then. They’re some of my favourite children’s books and I already know I will enjoy them as much now as I did when I last reread them as a teenager.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it, no paper notices plastered on lampposts and billboards. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.”
This is one of my all-time favourite books and I’d like to reread it at least once a year. I haven’t read it yet in 2016 – I last read it in January of 2015 for a book club – so hopefully I have time to get to it before the end of the year. It’s such a wonderful, magical book; the storyline flows beautifully and grips you from the very beginning because the writing is just fantastic.
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Evacuated to their mysterious uncle’s house during the war, the four Pevensie children stumble through a wardrobe into a world of magic and adventure.
These were some of the first fantasy books I ever read as a child and to this day they are some of my favourites. I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding this series, but as a child I read them with no theological bias so I don’t really see it – and anyway, it’s a fantasy series. I’d also love to watch the rest of the movies made of the series as I’ve only seen The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien trades a life-time of servitude in the salt mines of Endovier for the chance to compete in a tournament where the winner becomes the King’s own assassin.
I only read this series last year just before Queen of Shadows was released but since reading Empire of Storms I think I’ve lost track of what the characters were like in the first two or three books. I’d like to reread the whole series at some point so I can really see the character development in action.
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen are the only survivors when the luxury spaceliner they’re travelling in crashes on a lonely planet. The two couldn’t be more different but they must work together to survive their hostile new surroundings.
I didn’t reread each instalment in this trilogy when the next ones came out, and now I own and have read all three I’m dying to binge read them. I love YA set in space so unless somebody can give me some recs, I’ll be rereading this series and also The Illuminae Files over and over again until I die.
